Sacred Retreat
Set in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, the project transforms a disused stone quarry into a meditative retreat. The conceptual genesis of this design is epitomized by the subtractive carving technique, which delineates the distinction between public and meditation spaces. This programming highlights the strategic placement of the stairs. Functioning as a ceremonial procession, the stairs guide individuals from the predominant public space on the plan’s right side towards the dedicated meditation space on the left. The 36’x36’x36’ stone mass became the canvas for creating carved spaces that harmonize with the natural landscape. Along with this, paths and outdoor spaces are carved into the design, synthesizing natural elements and subtractive design.
